Turkish Basketball Nowadays TBL is the top men's professional basketball league in Turkey, with a history dating back as far as 1904. The first full team was formed by Galatasaray Lisesi in 1911, but there's certainly been a good number if developments that have taken place since then. Of course, most sports have tended to evolve over the years, especially once league formations come into place. For example, at the time when the Turkish Basketball League was first taking place, a Japanese variation on the game of football was first taking shape, and the lowball and split-pot versions of poker were just beginning to gain popularity. Basketball, however, had already gained much public interest within Turkey itself, with many of the rules and regulations having already been established. Because of this, an initial league was ready to come together as early as 1927. This unofficial league, which had been founded in Istanbul, was the main league in place until the formation of the regional official league in 1933. This lead to championship tournaments being played between the leading clubs which has formed in the areas of Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir. However, it was not until 1969 that the Turkish Basketball Federation founded the a league which resembles the TBL that is currently in place today. This league still functions using a number of the basic principles which were established at this time. There are a total of sixteen teams, each of which will face eac other twice - once on home ground, and once at the home of the opposing team. After this, the top eight teams will have qualified to take part in the playoff games. The teams who place within the top two positions of the Second League are promoted to the Premier League, in a switch with the bottom placing teams in this league. |
